Guidelines for Research and Scholarship Recognition and Reward Program

As an academic unit of a research intensive institution, the University of Utah College of Nursing (CoN) is committed to recognizing and rewarding successful scholarship. These guidelines establish consistency in the provision of incentives and rewards to grow the research enterprise in the areas of (1) amount of indirect cost recovery (F&A) funds generated, (2) ranking based on extramural funding for research, (3) number of faculty investigators, (4) number of grant submissions and funded grants, and (5) number of scholarly publications that enhance our reputation, visibility, and scientific contribution.

This Reward and Recognition program is funded by returned overhead [indirect cost fee; the percent returned to the university for facilities and administration (F&A)] from funded research and training grants and is dependent on an ongoing revenue stream from this source. Regular and paid auxiliary faculty as defined by University policy are eligible for awards under this policy. Faculty must be employed in the CoN at the time of the distribution of any Recognition and Reward funds. Awards are made in Fall semester for activities in the previous fiscal year.

 1.  Grant Incentive Program

Grant writing incentives are awarded annually to Principal Investigator (PI) or Program Director for grant applications submitted and/or funded in the previous year.  The PI can choose to share the award with other faculty involved in grant preparation.

a)      Awards will be transferred into a faculty development account and designated for individual faculty use.

b)      Qualifying grants include all peer-reviewed extramural grants and university level, peer-reviewed applications for research, training, or practice grants (e.g., UU faculty seed grants and University Research Committee but not college or departmental grants (e.g., CoN Research Committee).

c)      If there are multiple PIs officially designated on the application, awards are based on the assumption of equal effort and the award is divided equally among PIs. If one or more co-PIs are not CoN faculty members, the award to CoN faculty will be proportional to the equally divided effort.

d)     To be eligible for the award, faculty must assure a copy of the full application and required forms are submitted to the research office.

 For each peer-reviewed grant submitted

>$100,000                   $  500

$5,000 to $99,999       $  250

For each peer-reviewed grant awarded

>$100,000                   $1000

$5,000 to $99,999       $  500

2. Application Success Program

Incentive award is enhanced by $250 for research and training applications involving one or more of the following quality enhancement activities in the application process, conducted early enough in grant development to allow the comments and recommendations to be incorporated prior to submission:

  • Affinity Group participation
  • Charette
  • External review

3. Small Grants Program

The College of Nursing Research Committee reviews applications and oversees small grant awards. Proposals can be submitted for review prior to each meeting monthly. Maximum award is determined annually by the CoN Research Committee. For 2010-2011 the maximum award is $5000 per project. (Additional guidelines and application on CoN website).

4.  Affinity Groups

Request for funds can also be submitted to the Research Committee to support Affinity groups (maximum $500).  An Affinity group is a chartered group of people with similar research interests.  The group provides a forum for engaging in conceptualization, design, implementation, analysis, and dissemination of research related to specific area or methodology. Money can be used to support and promote their work in the specific area of interest.

 5. F&A Sharing after Extramural Funding

For grants that derive Facilities and Administration fees (F&A; "indirect costs"), 5% of the total F&A earned the previous year (or one-third of indirect costs returned to the College for the project, whichever is less) will be awarded to faculty. The award will be apportioned 50% to the PI and the remaining 50% to principal and co-investigators by percent effort on the grant as a development fund or salary incentive.

6. Semester Scholarship Institute

Each Spring the Research Committee will accept applications from faculty author teams who will receive $1000 per author (maximum $2000 per manuscript divided equally if > 2 authors) for development and submission of a manuscript to a peer reviewed journal during the designated semester.  Awards are made to development accounts and number of awards is contingent upon funding availability derived from returned overhead from successful extramural grant funding.

Each recipient of a SSI award will be required to participate in a writing group or writing development program. Faculty ineligible for SSI include adjunct faculty and faculty receiving workload credit or grant funding that encompasses the proposed manuscript.  SSI eligibility criteria, application procedures, and award requirements are determined annually by the Research Committee and detailed in a guideline posted on the CoN website.
