About Simulation
The Intermountain Healthcare Simulation Learning Center (IHSLC) is a state-of-the-art virtual hospital located in the College of Nursing. Created through
Intermountain Healthcare's generous contribution of $4 million, the 12,600 square-foot center will be utilized to prepare the next generation of nurses for Utah and the Intermountain region.
Simulation-based learning utilizes life-size computerized manikins that replicate not only human appearance but also respond to human intervention help to sequentially prepare and evaluate undergraduate and graduate level nursing students in patient-care scenarios. The method safely allows students to see the consequences of his/her actions and non-actions and most importantly, how quickly intervention can make a difference. Students gain clinical reasoning skills, confidence and hands-on experience which can lead to improve patient safety and enhanced patient care delivery when they enter a busy hospital environment. Computer information systems replicating those found in actual healthcare settings allow students to learn how to input and extract information as well as navigate complex electronic health record systems. In addition to use by nursing students and faculty, this interdisciplinary center will be utilized by the entire Health Sciences Campus, as well as by hospital staff from the community for team training and certifications.
Simulation-based learning can occur at various levels and with different modalities, so the IHSLC is divided into two studios of focus: "basic" referring to the procedure or skill learning scenarios division and "advanced" covering the more complex scenarios.
